On 20 – 21st of June 2016 the BEAC Transport Ministerial and the Steering Committee of the Barents Euro-Arctic Transport Area convened in Arkhangelsk, Russia
The BEAC Ministerial Meeting gathered participants from transport authorities from Norway, Finland, Sweden, European Commission, regional administrations – members of the Barents Regional Council, International Barents Secretariat, Council of the Baltic Sea States, as well as various stakeholders in the transport sector, and academics.
The Meeting was chaired by Mr. Maxim Sokolov, Minister of Transport of the Russian Federation, who noted importance of maintaining the existing level of co-operation, and emphasised the necessity to search for new possibilities fulfilling the potential of the Barents region and enhance mobility of the people of this unique area.
Mr. Sergey Aristov, State-Secretary, Vice-Minister of Transport of the Russian Federation, noted, among other things, importance of the complex attitude in development of the transport system of the Barents region and simplification of the border-crossing procedures.
The Meeting closed by accepting a joint Declaration (see below).
Within the frames of the Russian Chairmanship in BEAC in 2015 – 2017 a Steering Committee Meeting of the Barents Euro-Arctic Area convened on 20 June 2016.
The Chair´s priorities for the coming working period are further work on the Joint Barents Transport Plan, implementation of the safety and security systems on the international road connections of the region, education for employees of the transport sector working in the Arctic zones, and enhancement of the co-operation with the other international transport organisations and fora, and in particular the Northern Dimension Partnership on Transport and Logistics.
